Stairwell to Nowhere
From ProjectLoop
In Millennium Park, there is a stairwell. It’s completely overgrown with ivy, and it leads to nowhere.
There’s a small drain the bottom, for rainwater one would presume, but other than that it doesn’t seem to lead anywhere or serve a purpose. Last year I walked on stilts for Manifest, and then my stilting partner and I explored the city at night during Looptopia with only our summer clothes, facepaint, and a handle of Captain Morgan’s to keep us warm.
We spent a good hour sitting in that stairwell, passing the bottle back and forth and talking about our hopes and dreams. Every now and then we would hear someone above us say “What’s this?” and a college student would proceed to push through the ivy and come see who was down there. We’d offer them rum in exchange for friendship and a story, and when they were finished and had left we would go back to our discussion. Then you’d hear someone else say “Hey, where does this go…?” and the pattern would start up all over again. That stairwell to nowhere made us a lot of friends. (Although I’m sure the rum helped too.)
Looking up at the ivy covering the stairwell:
